Trump’s government to reopen US embassy in Caracas

(MENAFN) The United States is taking initial steps toward potentially restoring its diplomatic presence in Venezuela, according to statements attributed to a senior government official. As reported by officials, preparations are underway that could allow the US embassy in Caracas to resume operations, though no definitive decision has yet been reached.

Commenting on the matter, the official said, “As President Trump said, we are making preparations to allow for a reopening should the President make that decision,” emphasizing that discussions remain exploratory and conditional. The official spoke anonymously due to the sensitivity of the issue.

Authorities clarified that the planning process is still in its early phases, and there has been no formal approval to proceed. When asked directly about the possibility of reopening the embassy, President Trump addressed reporters during a flight aboard Air Force One, stating: “We’re thinking about it.”

The US diplomatic mission in Venezuela was shut down in 2019 after Washington recognized opposition figure Juan Guaido as the country’s legitimate leader, rejecting the validity of President Nicolas Maduro’s 2018 reelection. Following the closure, US diplomatic and consular affairs related to Venezuela have been managed from the American embassy in Colombia.

These developments follow reports of a US military operation carried out overnight that resulted in the detention of President Maduro in Caracas and his subsequent transfer to New York. According to reports, Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, entered not guilty pleas on Monday to charges related to firearms and drug trafficking.
